C arol started her pioneer service at eight o’clock on Saturday morning. She dropped the children off at Grandma O’Connor’s, then returned home. Ten minutes later, Marge Kulick, her partner, picked her up.
At twelve o’clock noon, Mark was in the garage changing the oil on his lawn tractor when a green Ford pulled up the driveway and parked. Carol was sitting in the passenger seat. The driver was a woman with bright red hair. He glanced at his watch and wondered, What’s Carol doing home at this hour?
The two women were giggling like a couple of schoolgirls.
Their bodies were convulsing in throws of laughter. He hadn’t heard happy sounds like it in months.
Mark walked over to the passenger side and stuck his head in the window. He made a feeble effort to kiss Carol but accidentally bumped his bottom lip against her front teeth. Jerking back, his head hit the doorframe. To add to his pain and confusion, both women appeared to be naked from the waist up. The girls saw the look of surprise on his face and launched into another wave of hysteria. Mark squeezed his lower lip and gaped at the two women.
They were soaking wet, and their blouses clung to them like an extra layer of skin. Suddenly realizing the transparency, the two women tried to cover up, laughing all the harder. Carol gave up, dropped her hands, and leaned out the window. Between giggles she pressed little healing kisses on his lip. “I’m sorry. I bet that hurt. Oh,” she exclaimed like an excited teenager, “you two haven’t met.” Carol wheeled around, pointed to Marge, and burst out laughing. Her friend was cowering in the driver’s seat with her hands crossed over her ample breasts. Marge rolled her eyes.
“I want you to meet my husband, Mark.” She turned. “This is Marge Kulick.”
Marge sobered for a moment. “Hi, how is your lip?”
Mark leaned into the passenger window and extended his hand so Marge could shake it.
He waited.
Marge looked at his hand and slowly shook her head. “No, sorry, my hands are occupied at the moment.
Mark exclaimed. “Oh…oh, I can see that. I’m sorry. It’s nice meeting you.”
Carol slapped his hand playfully and said, “Down boy.”
Marge appeared to be Carol’s age. Her face was decorated with an appealing pattern of freckles. Her dark-blue eyes and full lips were pleasantly accented by long straight red hair that was soaking wet and curly on the ends.
“Why don’t you two ladies come in and change your clothes. Then you can tell me who won the wet T-shirt contest at the Kingdom Hall.”
Carol gave him a threatening look that said, I don’t think Marge appreciates your warped sense of humor .
“I was getting ready to start lunch. May I fix you two wet wenches something to eat?”
Carol turned to Marge and asked apologetically, “Would you like to stay for lunch? Mark is extremely militant. It might give you indigestion.”
“Sure, it sounds like fun.”
Mark asked, “Are you by any chance a vegetarian?” Marge shook her head.
